As a member of the Genetic Alliance South Africa community, by joining us you can help unite the sector with one voice so together we can reach our mutual goals on behalf of all those affected or at risk of congenital disorders. The more members of GA-SA representing different patient support groups and congenital disorders, and the greater the geographical coverage – will all serve to enhance our advocacy efforts to leverage awareness, political commitment and support for the services required.
Specific benefits to joining GA-SA include:
Unite: By joining Ga-SA you are uniting with many other patient support groups and stakeholders. Together, we can have a greater impact by raising awareness and leveraging support for the services required for care and treatment.
Support: GA-SA helps to connect patients, parents and caregivers with the patient support groups and also encourages patients to start up their own support networks. Awareness and education projects and events and community training programmes also benefit members as well as training provided to medical professionals to improve diagnosis and quality of care.
Advocacy: GA-SA provides input into policy development, and mobilizes support to highlight shortfalls in service provision. Ongoing, comprehensive monitoring of current and revised policy and legislation implementation will identify key areas requiring improvement, combined with specific, grass root level needs specified by members.
Research: GA-SA has access to the knowledge base within the medical genetic community and can learn and share best practice with the membership community. By serving as a hub and connecting patients/support groups with potential collaborating researchers, GA-SA will also develop relevant, evidence-based research on congenital disorders in South Africa.
