The CAPS curriculum for Grade 11-12 for Life Sciences includes content on Human Genetics, including some examples of congenital disorders. To help bring this theoretical content to life and to demonstrate practical application, GA-SA has initiated a pilot schools project.
As a first step and initial phase, this involves outreach visits into schools in collaboration with specific support groups to talk to Matric Life Sciences pupils about congenital disorders and give examples of first-hand experience of living with a congenital disorder.
The first talk was held at Bryanston High School in July 2015 and included speakers from the Albinism Association of South Africa (ASSA) and GA-SA.
