What is a Medical Geneticist?
Medical geneticists are specialized medical practitioners involved in the care – diagnosis, treatment and counselling- of patients affected or at risk of congenital disorders. After a diagnosis is made they may oversee the treatment of the patient or refer the patient to other specialists (e.g. surgeons, paediatric neurologists) relevant to specific aspects of care for the condition or disorder. They may counsel the patients directly or refer them to a genetic counsellor.
Where can I find a Medical Geneticist?
In South Africa there are a limited number of practicing medical geneticists and they are clustered in Gauteng, the Western Cape and the Free State. Outreach clinics are held annually at other locations around the country by academic centres.
